The Poulsbo Vikings

Having completed our bash up the West Coast from Mexico in September 2013, we spent the remainder of the winter months in Seattle at Elliott Bay Marina.  We made several short excursions in the area, including a cruise to Poulsbo for the Winter Rendezvous.  A surprising number of boats turned out for the event, taking up the challenge to boat during the cold temperatures of February.

The annual event is the brainchild of Chip Hanauer, one of the most successful Unlimited Hydroplane racers in history.  A Seattle native and WSU graduate, “Chip” (Lee Edward) Hanauer became a household name from the late 1970’s to the early 1990’s and is fondly remembered as pilot of Miss Budweiser.  He jokes that he is now learning how to handle a real boat after leaving the fast-pace hydroplane racing behind.  He retired in 1996 after suffering a series of high-speed hydroplane accidents but that hasn’t stopped Chip; he continues to look for new adventures with his 27 foot Ranger Tug and refers to himself as “The Boat Guy.”  It was a special treat to meet him and the rendezvous turned out to be a great success.  The event opened with the local marching band and the Poulsbo Vikings who lit a welcoming bonfire at the waterfront park.  Yes, the charm of Poulsbo remains after the first Scandinavian pioneers settled here on the shores of Liberty Bay more than 100 years ago.  Other events for the Winter Rendezvous included games, food, prizes, and tours of local breweries; a dinner/dance served as the finale to a fun weekend with other year-round boaters.   We awoke the following morning to a blanket of snow and gingerly walked to the Sons of Norway for breakfast before departing the marina on a lovely, cold winter day.
